They were married under the stars on New Years Eve. He’d liked her for a long time and his heart dropped when she moved over 1,000 miles away. After putting off the call for days, he finally picked up the phone. She didn’t give an immediate answer but he was hopeful. When she answered “yes,” they dated long distance with cross country flights as work schedules allowed.

Fast forward several months, the date was set and everything was in order when an unexpected family emergency just days before the wedding forced them to postpone the date. Torn with questions, the following week passed in a daze. Joanna stayed as David worked through his grief. Through the turmoil, they realized they would rather spend the first part of their marriage healing together than grieving alone.

I was at a New Years event when I received news that David and Joanna were having an impromptu wedding ceremony at a local park that evening. “Can you be there with your camera?” she asked. After she explained the details a bit more, Aaron and I sprung into action and arrived just as David was baptized in a freezing river. He changed into his suit and with several close family and friends, we gathered in prayer. That night we witnessed two people, completely broken by the last week’s events, promise to be faithful and together, walk through what ever life would throw in their path.

David and Joanna, here we are, a year later on your anniversary. I am so so proud of you and even more grateful to be allowed to share in your journey. You’ve been through so much together and I love seeing how much stronger you are and the way it’s brought you closer. Thank you for being such precious souls and dear friends.
