I geeked out at Dorcas & Eli’s family session at their historical farmhouse. She had sent me the address but you know how it is when you first arrive at a new place. I wanted to make sure I was at the right place. The address led me to this big brick historical farmhouse. A large flaming maple tree stood guard before a white pillared wrap around porch, (scroll to the end to see it.)

When I saw the house, I really hoped I was at the right place because I was in love. I’ve had a thing for old homes for a while now, especially farm houses. I’m enchanted by the story in these old homes. The fact that a family has lived and died here for generations, tending the soil and making it their life’s work is incredible to me. People treasure different things here on this earth. Some value nice things, others travel. As strange as it sounds to some, I’d be happy to have land to call my own. I want to cultivate it and to raise my family to appreciate hard work and its rewards, to tend to living things and be a part of the cycle of life. To me, the heart and soul of a nation is found in its farmers, in whatever capacity that may be.

There’s a certain amount of peace of mind found in tending to what’s in front of you. That may be your animals, your garden, or your daily kitchen duties. Desiring to be great is just that, “great,” but most of us will change the world in bigger ways by setting our hand to what’s in front of us and doing it with excellence. As it turns out, change often starts with changing your habits. I’m guessing you’ve figured out by now that it’s pretty easy to do something amazing once or twice. It’s much harder to show up daily and do that little thing again and again when no one’s cheering for you.

Dorcas and Eli, I had so much fun with you! I feel like we’re kindred spirits and I can’t wait to spend more time with you. Thank you for sharing your home with me and I look forward to seeing you restore and update it. Squish Amanda’s cheeks for me, she’s a precious little girl.
